Bitcoin Pizza Day: two pizzas worth $822.3M
On 22 May 2010 a programmer in Florida paid 10,000 bitcoin for two Papa John’s pizzas. It was the first time bitcoin bought something in the real world.
The story
Laszlo Hanyecz posted on the Bitcointalk forum offering 10,000 BTC to anyone who would deliver two large pizzas. A few days later another user ordered them and accepted the coins — then worth roughly 40 dollars. The date, 22 May, is now celebrated every year as Bitcoin Pizza Day.
Why it matters
The pizzas proved that bitcoin could be exchanged for real goods. The price looks absurd today, but early transactions like this one gave bitcoin its first market value.
